The Talking Knot

K11 Art Mall

Have you ever wondered how history was written down before the invention of words? Dated back long to 1100 AD, prehistoric Inca record-keepers in the Andean South America encoded a tremendous quantity and variety of data using knotted and dyed strings, which formed the ancient textile record-keeping system, Khipu, also known as the talking Inca knots. I took the inspiration of the profound heritage and wisdom of Khipu , I reinterpreted the interrelationship of contemporary aesthetics of knot art in fashion industry and its cultural value in record-keeping by adopting various textile materials and knot patterns for the design of three handmade knot art installations, 1) Talking Knots, 2) Encoding The Secret Codes and 3) Sitting on The Data.
